Why Do People Lie

I think the reason why most people lie is because they are afraid of having a punishment. For example, if you go to court, is the criminal who stole, killed, or smuggled going to tell that they commited the crime. They will plead not guilty and let their lawyer do the talking. Another example is that if you are little and you go into your mom's closet and find the presents for Christmas, are you going to tell her that you saw them? You wouldn't want to tell her for fear she might take the presents back.

I think you're right! People also lie when they want to make themselves sound better than they are (like lying on their resume, etc.). This still relates back to your theory of fear of punishment, I think. People are afraid they will experience the punishment of rejection, not getting a job, etc., if they don't make themselves sound better.
